Volunteer Program Guidelines

  • Students are not required to complete community service in order to graduate however if the participate in the volunteer program, they are able to earn high school credits, and may be eligible for awards, recognitions or scholarships. 
     
  • Some programs including the National Honor Society (by invitation only) and the Harper Promise Program do require community service.
     
  • Students who volunteer in the community can earn extra credit on their high school transcript:  30 hours for ¼  credit, 60 hours for ½ credit, 90 hours for ¾ credit and 120 hours for one full credit (maximum). Credit will be issued on a pass/fail basis and will be posted on the transcript at the end of each semester.
     
  • Students will report their volunteer hours electronically in Transeo. Mrs. Horcher will still verify and approve volunteer hours.  Students can track volunteer hours using Infinite Campus. Email Mrs. Horcher  with any questions. 
     
  • Please note that any volunteering organization which is not on the BHS published list of Student Volunteer Opportunities must be pre-approved to ensure that it will qualify for school credit. Please complete a Pre-approval form email it to  Mrs. Horcher for approval. 
     
  • In general, hours volunteered for for profit businesses will not be accepted Please reach out to Mrs. Horcher is you have any questions. 
     
  • Any volunteering that is over 30 hours needs to provide a written verification of your volunteer hours, click here for verification form, or provide an email verification. 
     
  • Student clubs that do volunteer work must check with Mrs. Horcher first to determine number of hours that can be earned. 
     
  • Students must not miss school/classes for volunteering. 
     
  • Virtual volunteering will no longer be accepted, including virtual tutoring, letter writing and baking. 
     
  • For volunteering outside of the Chicagoland area, you are required to send an email or written verification describing your activities, the dates they were performed, and the number of hours you volunteered.
